The Stepanovs and Hajo Seppelt win Play the Game award

This years Play the Game award was presented at the 2017 conference in Eindhoven.

The scandals pointing to government organised doping have been at the forefront of international sport reporting since 2014. A German TV show was the first of many reports documenting what led to the ban of hundreds of Russian athletes at the Rio Olympics and beyond.

This years Play the Game award winners are, athletes, Yulia and Vitaly Stepanov, and german investigative journalist, Hajo Seppelt, who broke the story.

Yulia and Vitaly were vital to the unveiling of the Russian doping scandal.

They were contacted on a video-call and were greeted with a standing ovation from the guests at this years conference.

Hajo Seppelt was able to accept the award in person.

Play the Game’s international director, Jens Sejer Andersen told them: “You have shown us what can be achieved with personal courage, unwavering commitment and tireless efforts, and you fully deserve the Play the Game Award 2017 and a round of applause.”
